Free Online Meditation Conference

Meditation.....

It's very trendy these days.  Gaining popularity in mainstream media and medical circles - while being a mainstay in yoga and spiritual communities for as long as yoga and spirit have existed.  From the Mayo Clinic to MindBodyGreen to Russell Simmons to even the Harvard Business Review, everyone is touting the benefits of incorporating a meditation practice into your daily life.

...Relieve Stress
alleviate illness...
.....promote spiritual connection...
....improve relationships
enhance mental performance....

and more.

I came across this free online Meditation conference on Entheos.  Led by Yoga and Meditation teacher Ashley Turner, the conference is available to be streamed on your computer for free from April 21st through April 25th.

Check out the Conference Overview from the En*Theos website:

Ashley interviewed 30+ world-class experts ranging on topics from the neuroscience of meditation, mindfulness based stress-reduction, Positive Psychology, Transcendental Meditation, the Mind-Body connection, Buddhism and Tantra.

Demystify meditation, discover a wide-range of tools from many different traditions so you can choose which practice fits your personality and lifestyle and start meditating today.

As yogis have known for centuries and scientists have more recently discovered, the benefits of meditation are profound! This conference breaks down meditation in an accessible and practical way - so even if you only have 5 minutes, you can begin a daily meditation practice.

Amazing yoga teachers, spiritual leaders, and pop culture icons are speaking during the online global conference.  Even if you can only listen to 1 or 2, it's worth it! And free!

Namaste :)

Orzo with chicken, chickpeas, and avocado tossed in Red Wine Mustard Vinaigrette

Need a quick, warm, yummy dinner this week?
Switch up your winter pasta with some feel good Orzo and add in whatever else you have in the fridge!  Once again, I found myself with no plan for dinner and 7pm looming quick.  So I threw 2 chicken breasts in the oven with some olive oil and seasoning, and put a box of Orzo in some hot boiling water.

Here's how it went down....:)

Pasta:
2 baked or sauteed chicken breasts (seasoned lightly and thinly sliced)
1 Box cooked Orzo Pasta
1 bell pepper (thinly sliced)
1 avocado
1 yellow onion
1 can of chickpeas/garbanzo
4 oz. Goat Cheese
Parmesan Cheese, Pepper to garnish

Red Wine Mustard Vinaigrette:
2 TBS olive oil
2TBS Red Wine Vinegar
2 TBS water
1-2 tsp lemon juice
1 TBS Honey Mustard
Salt and Pepper
1/2 packet Sweetener
(feel free to taste and add more or less of each ingredient depending on your taste!)

Sautee the onion and bell pepper in olive oil and some garlic salt.  Add all the pasta ingredients together.  The Goat Cheese will create a creamy yummy sauce over the Orzo.  Pour Vinaigrette over the top and toss all together. Add some Parm and Pepper at the end for a last minute zest and enjoy!

It was great piping hot that night or cold for lunch the next day!

Sunday Family Dinner: Savory Southwestern Chicken Chowder and Tasty Turkey Buffalo Balls!

I woke up this morning to the feeling of....

FALL!!!!!
(I know, I know...shocking right? Everyone is chomping at the bit for September 21st to hit!)

BUT...nevertheless, it's Sunday. It's September.  It's fall y'all!! Football will be on the TV all day, 100 degree days are finally behind us, and pumpkins are piled high at grocery stores.
Everyone loves this time of year.  You can't help but see the childlike joy that comes over us when we think about hot apple cider, savory soups, changing leaves, and skinny jeans with boots:) I love it.

Sunday means... Family Dinner Day: a last minute invitation will go out to great friends, and whomever can make it over to our beach bungalow will.  There will be a tasty meal, some tasty wine…and of course….a tasty game (or 6) on TV.  I wasn't sure what menu I was going to come up with until I woke up.  And then I knew...

It's not quite time for pasta (another fall family tradition), But it felt like time for soup! So I decided to dominate a fairly simple Southwestern Chicken Chowder, with delicious and healthy buffalo turkey balls to start.  It will hopefully be amazing…and of course…there will be some hot apple cider simmering on the stove as well.
How can you not get excited for a Sunday like that?  Like I said….I love Fall:)

First thing's first, let's keep this easy people! It's technically a day of rest:), and I never want these impromptu dinners to be stressful in anyway.  An afternoon filled with husbands and football means the food better be hearty, simple to serve, and easy to eat while the cheering and jeering ensues in my living room.  It is also relatively impossible to pry them away from the TV...so a meal crowded around our coffee table was inevitable.  That, however, does NOT mean we can't spruce up said coffee table and add a little pizazz to go with this Sunday family dinner! A hodgepodge pile of 50 cent pumpkins and some pretty tea lights were just the ticket:)

Next I popped these delicious and GLUTEN FREE Buffalo Balls in the oven. This recipe is a fabulous Pinterest find for me, and honestly I haven't seen a need to alter it in any way.  So credit where credit due check out these

In all honesty I almost didn't get a picture taken, that's how fast they were being consumed!

super delish with some ranch dressing to dip!

And finally this very easy Chicken Chowder.

1/2 cup chopped onion (I've been loving yellow ones)
4 bacon strips, diced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 package (32ish ounces) frozen cubed hash brown potatoes(Or chop up raw ones if you have time/energy!)
2 cans (14.5 ounces each) chicken broth
1 can (14-3/4 ounces) cream-style corn
1 can (11 ounces) Mexicorn, drained
1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies
1/2 cup pearl onions (frozen or not...whatever you can find in store)
1 Rotisserie Chicken!
salt and pepper to taste!

1. In a Dutch oven (or soup pan), saute onion and bacon until onion is tender and bacon is crisp.  Stir in the flour, cumin, chili powders, and garlic powder.  Cook on high and stir for 1 minute or until thickened.

2.  Stir in the hash browns, broth, cream corn, Mexicorn, chilies and pearl onions.  Bring to a boil.  Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until heated through. Add more broth if you like it less thick. While simmering, pull meat off the the rotisserie chicken in bite sized pieces.  Stir into soup. Add salt and pepper and more spices to taste.

Yield: I would say 6-8 servings depending on what else you serve with it.  Rossi and I have a tendency to go back for seconds a lot!! This soup just gets better and better and thicker and thicker the longer you let it simmer...and it's AMAZING as leftovers!

SO...that was pretty much it for a fun, family filled Sunday!  No music playlist for this get together...football ruled the speakers today.  But there was much love and much laughter...All around a wonderful Sorella Style event:)

Love and laughter!

Bye Bye Baby (weight!)

Four months ago today my life was forever changed.  Our beautiful baby boy, James came into this world.  Four weeks early, but healthy as can be, his little face and hands and mouth and feet introduced me to a kind of love I had never felt before.  An unconditional, unwavering, deep in your soul kind of love.  Weighing in at 5 pounds 13 oz he was a little peanut, but wow was our baby strong.  He didn't have to spend a moment in the NICU, and he was trying to push his tiny little head right off of our chests the day his was born.

Happy 4th of July!

Sweet baby James at almost 4 months

The past four months have been filled with so many firsts, and our little man is growing and changing every day.  It truly is the most amazing thing I have ever done.  However, now its time for me to make some changes.  I have been trying (not successfully) to get my workouts and diet back on track, and NOW at the four month mark I am going to actually commit to making the change.

I have researched a lot of different programs and have decided to try Harley Pasternak's Body Reset Diet.  The cover of the book says "power your metabolism, blast fat and shed pounds in just 15 days"! All of that sounds great to me, and after researching the plan, it truly doesn't seem that tough to follow.  I don't need to be educated on the right kinds of foods to eat, or what's healthy-believe me I know ALL of that kind of stuff.  What I need is just a little jumpstart to get back on track.

image via internet

Harley Pasternak has worked with Kim Kardashian, Amanda Seyfried, Megan Fox and Hilary Duff just to name a few.  All of these women have great figures, and both Megan Fox and Hilary Duff are post baby and look fantastic! Kim is post baby too, but clearly she is in hiding (I don't blame her!).  Those who know me, know that I do love a little celebrity in my life, so why not start "training" with a celebrity trainer! :) One of the things I love most about Harley's book is that he understands our need for instant gratification when it comes to losing weight and getting fit.  His plan starts with 5 days of smoothies-3 smoothies a day with two 150 calorie snacks mixed in a day.  All the exercise he asks for in the first 5 days is 10,000 steps a day.  Shouldn't be to tough, right?

Having a baby changes everything, and I mean everything when it comes to our bodies.  Of course I wouldn't trade any of these changes for the world, but enough is enough. :-) I have bought all of our groceries for the first 5 days of smoothies and snacks and can't wait to get started today. My hubby is on board which helps so much.  I will update next Monday with pounds lost, healthy living tips and how I am feeling so far.  Wish me luck! ;-)

Hope you all have a great Monday!

Kara

Words of Wisdom for Every Woman...

I saw this article on Huffington Post last week and loved every word of it.  See for yourself.

My dearest daughter,

Celebrating your 28th birthday has made me reflect and want to share some well-earned wisdom with you. You know, the kind of stuff I wish someone had told me when I was your age? Yes, I know you didn't ask, but we both know that has never stopped me before.

First up, turning 28 is NOT approaching mid-life. Your young years are far from over, and, no, you're not "old." But you're right, time does goes by way too quickly. Best to make the most of it each step along the way.

As you grow older, I hope you will live your life with the spunk and audacity you were born with. Those gifts were bestowed upon you by a higher power. Use them every chance you get and never let them stray too far away from you.

Try not to criticize yourself, second guess your feelings, doubt your abilities or be too hard on yourself when you think you've failed. The world does all those things for you and it is your job to stand up to it, not give in to it.

Know that failing is a required curriculum to life. Without it, it is doubtful that you will ever truly succeed. Don't be afraid of it. You don't have to like it, you just have to get good at it. Failure is success turned inside out.

Take chances. Be bold. Be silly. It's okay. Living in the box has never been where the magic happens. Align yourself with the unordinary, the risky and the spectacular. It's where you were born to be.

Friends will come and go, but the good ones stick. Value them. And while your husband and family will always come first, never lose sight of those friends that have seen you through some of life's rough spots. You will need them again, and they, you.

Try hard not to worry so much. It causes wrinkles, stomach aches, paranoia and the worries seldom materialize. And stay off of WebMD. No good has ever come from general Internet diagnosis.

From time to time, you may become self-conscious of your body. Don't. Your figure will never be finer, your hair will never be fuller, your skin will never be as refined and you will never have as much energy as you do now. Appreciate it.

Life doesn't end when you become a parent. You know I can't wait for the little bundle(s) of joy to come into your life, but there is no hurry. I will admit that life as you know it will never be the same. But the secret is, the ties you are afraid of binding you, will in fact set you sailing into a world of wonder and perpetual love. Trust me on this one.

As a wife, you are going to make mistakes. You may at times be judgmental, critical, temperamental and perhaps a tad dramatic. It's not just you. It's how we are hard wired. But know that once spoken, harsh words can never be taken back. I hope you forgive freely, hug strongly, cry often and let the little things go. They are almost all little things.

There will be times that you find yourself impatient or angry with your mother. It's more natural than you might imagine. But please understand that she is doing the best she can and she is doing it for all the right reasons... for love of you. At times, I know we can be exasperating. But there will never be anyone that walks this Earth that loves you like your mother. Respect it. It will one day be you.

Make time to spend with your family. We would like to think that our family is forever. But it's not. We grow old, we get sick and we die. It's the natural course of things. We are just visitors here. Make sure that you don't pass up too many offers to spend time with them, to laugh, joke, eat, drink and make memories. You will treasure those memories, and one day they will be all that is left.

Know that being strong doesn't always mean not crying. I fear that in my zeal to be strong for you as you were growing up, I didn't allow you to see the tears, the heartache and the disappointments. Shame on me. They are all a part of life, and you will not be able to avoid them, no matter how hard you try. But never, ever confuse tears with weakness. They will cleanse you of your hurt, and your heart will follow.

Be kind with your thoughts, gentle with your words, generous with your actions and forgiving with those who love you and fall short from time to time. None of us is perfect and more attention and gratitude should be given for the trying.

Life is hard. Love makes all things bearable. You will endure the hard knocks so much easier with someone who loves you by your side. Return the favor.

Complain less, be grateful more.

When you start your family and think that you have gotten in over your head, when you think you will never be able to be the perfect mom you envision yourself being, stop and breathe. There is no such thing as a perfect mom. You and that wonderful husband of yours will find your way. Lay your fears at the doorstep of your love.

Nothing worth having is easy to get. Everything has a price. Think about what you will have to pay for something before you act. Half the time, the acquisition is worth far less than the price paid.

Never confuse ego with confidence.

In the days that you do grow old, I hope you will realize that it is a privilege not offered to everyone. I wouldn't look down my nose at it. When the time comes, believe me, you will be happy to be there.

As for me, my darling daughter, I have loved you with the breathe of me since the moment you were born. Being your mother hasn't always been easy, but it has always been good. These days I am more of a spectator than a player in your day-to-day life. It's as it should be. I'm grateful that we are wonderful friends and companions of the best sort. I will always be, no matter what, your biggest fan. And I am here should you ever need me for anything. It is my life-long vocation.

Before I end my euphony of wisdom, let me say thank you. For so much. For your loyalty, your choices, your sweetness, kindness, compassion and humor. For trying even when you didn't think you could make it. For making me proud every single day that you live.

I know that you're not perfect. None of us are. But truth be told, to me, you are pretty damn close.

Love,
Mom

On The Couch: Pulling the Trigger

Lately I've been a little...well let's say paralyzed when it comes to making a decision.  This can be anything from sending my resume into a new but unknown company, to picking an area rug for our new dining room.  Big, small - a decision is a decision. I find it's much easier to completely avoid choosing which path to take than to suck it up and just pull the trigger....well at least at first.  After awhile the lack of forward momentum and the constant niggling in the back of my brain begins to drive me crazy.  But why does making a choice always feel so permanent?  And why does that commitment bring about such anxiety?

I think the first thing we need to look at is our fear of commitment.  The definition of commit is to bind or obligate, as by pledge or assurance; pledge, to give in trust or charge; consign. (source)

These are all heavy words - to bind, to pledge, to give in trust - and heavy words must be treated with respect.  But who said every decision we make has to be permanent?  Yes, decisions come with consequences.  Some big - hello marriage, children, moving, new job.  Some not so big - well, that color is completely wrong for the dining room...however it looks great in the guest bedroom!  But as long as every decision is made with as much truth to our spirit as possible, it can't be a wrong decision.  If we continue to see our commitments as something separate from our spirit, then they will always come with anxiety and fear of the unknown.  However, if we know ourselves inside and out, if we have really spent time discovering who we are and what we believe, then everything we choose to do in life is simply living up to that.  Our essential truth.  And there is nothing to be scared of, because no matter what it will be a discovery and learning process that leads us closer to joy.

Oh, and I chose a rug.  Finally :>)

On the Couch: Mindful Moon

I was on the ever enlightening Facebook the other day, and an old coworker had posted about an app she had recently discovered.  It’s called Mindful Moon, and it's basically a self-affirmation, pick me up in the middle of the day, getcha thinkin’ kind of app.  I downloaded it immediately as I have been in need of the occasional pick me up these days.  I gotta tell you.  It’s awesome!  It seems to know exactly what I’m thinking and what I might need to put a smile on my face.

For Example:
I had just gotten home from taking the pup I was caring for on a walk.  As I tried to enter my house, Cali (the pup) resisted walking into the shadowed living room, instead opting for the sun drenched deck outside.  Not a bad call right?  I decided to indulge her as I could literally feel the stress of the oncoming day start to creep up the base of my spine.

As Cali settled in to do some sunbathing, I sat down and… I found that I was frowning…on the inside.  Boo.  Why was I sad? It was a beautiful day…what was UP with me??  I needed a pick me up.  (On a side note, being a girl is weird, huh?  We are complicated, moody creatures...sigh…).  So I swiped my Iphone and clicked on the new app I’d just downloaded.   Here’s what it said:

“Breathe in Gratitude.  Breathe out negativity, stress, bad thoughts…

…Do this for 3-5 minutes.”

Ohhhkaaaayyy.   I closed my eyes and attempted to breathe.  Have you ever noticed how shallow and stunted our breath can be throughout the day?  It was like I couldn’t inhale for more than 2 seconds before I felt uncomfortably full and had to exhale.   Like I was choking on my own oxygen.  Do I really go through my day so closed up, so bottled in?  Wow.

My first grateful thought was…”love”.  It was all I had time to think before having to let the air out.  My first negative thought to let go was…”self hate”.  Ugh.  Kinda deep for a Sunday.  But….I might as well go ahead and get that bad feeling out of my head right?  So I kept going with it, just letting the thoughts ebb and flow as they wanted, each positive, grateful feeling proceeding it’s negative counterpart.

It was amazing.   Pretty quickly I felt my breath begin to lengthen, to lighten.  I felt a calm, lovely warmth settle around me.  I gave appreciation and acknowledgment to my husband, my family, and breathed out the fight we’d had, and the worry that I’m not there enough at home.  I thanked God for my health, and let go of the stupid guilt that I hadn’t worked out this week or the Chipotle (darn it) that I’d given in and eaten the day before.   I felt inspired that the world was full of possibility and I was only just beginning my journey.  And with pleasure, I threw away the feeling of dread when I thought about the future, what I was going to make of myself, and was I too old to start over?  I smiled when I thought of the precious puppy I got to take care of this week, and I let go of the annoyance that she woke me up at 5am:)  Trust me, I was pretty amazed, slightly scandalized, and fairly amused at some of the thoughts that floated in and out of my brain in those 5ish minutes.  I mean, if I hadn’t taken the short amount of time to acknowledge them and then get them the heck out of my head, would they have just festered, unknowing but all too powerful inside of me?  Ugh.  Not a pretty thought at all.

When I opened my eyes…I felt light.  My whole body had opened and softened to the world around me, almost like it was ready to accept the day (and myself) for whatever it (or I) was going to bring.   I had this big grin on my face, and I felt confident... and so sure that this day was going to be fun and magical.  So, lovely peeps, do yourself a favor.  Go download Mindful Moon immediately.  It might just save your day…

…even if you didn’t know it needed saving.

Love and all that stuff,
Kacey

On The Couch: Fearless

Today I was going to write about Flea Market Finds.  Yup.  All the fun, budget friendly home accessories that I found while be-bopping around the Long Beach Flea Market this past Sunday.  And while that post will come (there was some great stuff!), as I sat down to write today, I realized that wasn't what I wanted to talk about.

I want to talk about Fear.  That Big BAD all encompassing Fear.  I think it is the most debilitating emotion we can feel.  And I personally have been feeling it quite a bit lately.  This past summer I quit my job, sold a house, and moved 2,000 miles across the country to start over.  With my husband and dog, but still...I'm starting over.  And it scares me to death.  So much so that I've basically stopped doing anything.  I quit writing.  I put off starting this business with my sisters.  I quit songwriting.  I quit creating.

Fear manifests itself within me in the form of avoidance and procrastination.  I didn't even really say goodbye to all my friends (who are my Nashville family) properly...I just put the last box in my car and drove away.  Now I knew I'd be seeing them all soon...but avoiding all the change in my life, avoiding saying goodbye was a heck of a lot easier than facing it.

At least at first.  Now I've got this pesky frenemy we'll call Fear hanging over my shoulder.  Goodness, it's not just over my shoulder, it's been dragging me completely under.

And.
I.
Am.
Tired.
Of.
It.

I'm tired of being afraid.  I think I'm at a place where I recognize the only way to dig myself out of this hole I've dug (and oh yes, I dug it), is to let go of my fear. Just let it go.  It holds no purpose.  It has not one beneficial reason for hanging around anymore.  I'm sure it never did, but we all need to give ourselves a break every now and then, right?  Today is a new day.  Tomorrow will be an even newer one.  And I want to face it head on with excitement, creativity, wonder, and gratitude.

I just finished reading a fantastic book called My Year With Eleanor by Nicole Hancock.  It's one woman's story about how she overcame her fear of really living life by living out Eleanor Roosevelt's motto:

"Do one thing every day that scares you."

Read it. You'll love it, I promise :>)

I also just found the lyrics to a song my sister and I wrote in Nashville a few years ago...if I felt this way once, I can feel it again...

Fearless
(Coppola, Coppola, Evans)

I've always been scared of standing still
If I don't move fast enough someone else will
But I don't know just what it is I'm running from
Is it someone that I am afraid to become?

What would you do
What would you say
Would you hold on to love or give it away
If today you were fearless?
Who would you be
How would it feel
If the face looking back in the mirror was real
And you became all the beautiful things you've been dreaming
If today you were fearless

I want to look at the world through the eyes of a child
Innocent, hopeful, so brave and wild
No one to stop me and nothing to hold me down
Don't wait for tomorrow - the time is now

What would you do
What would you say
Would you hold on to love or give it away
If today you were fearless?
Who would you be
How would it feel
If the face looking back in the mirror was real
And you became all the beautiful things you've been dreaming
If today you were fearless?

If you weren't afraid to laugh
Weren't afraid to love
Weren't afraid to lose
You'd never think of giving up
If you weren't afraid of time passing you by...

tell me how would you live your life?

Who would you be
How would it feel
If the face looking back in the mirror was real
And you became all the beautiful things you've been dreaming
If today you were fearless?
If today you were fearless

If today you were fearless....
